About Us

Plaintext Group is a nonpartisan, technology policy initiative being developed by Schmidt Futures. Our mission is to strengthen U.S. leadership through the advancement of technological exploration and scientific discovery. Schmidt Futures' incubation of Plaintext Group is part of our effort to take on important public problems where systemic solutions may be available, by creating interdisciplinary institutions of exceptional people.

Governments, think tanks, and other policy institutes face a void of technical expertise, too often resulting in decision making that lacks the information needed to guide technology policy and its implications on our nation's future.

Plaintext Group brings together technologists and policy professionals to translate complex technical concepts into comprehensible “plain text” for policymakers, researchers, philanthropies, and nonprofits. We aim to inform debate by producing novel, relevant, and considered research insights into today's most important technology policy issues, including AI research and development, semiconductor manufacturing, modernization of government, and more.

Plaintext Group

Plaintext Group is a nonpartisan, technology policy collective housed within Schmidt Futures. Our mission is to move humanity forward by advancing technologies that will allow the U.S. to maintain competitiveness with World Leaders while simultaneously reinvigorating technological exploration and scientific discovery.

Plaintext does this by merging the technical and political world. We bring together technical experts and policy professionals to translate complex technical concepts into comprehensible “plain text” for policymakers, philanthropies, researchers, and nonprofits. We aim to inform debate by producing novel, relevant, and considered research insights into today's most important technology policy issues.

What does Plaintext Group do?

We leverage technical and policy expertise to produce novel, relevant, and considered research insights into today's most important technology policy issues. We publish these insights in easy-to-read formats so policymakers can quickly synthesize the information and turn it into action. We meet with policy staff, researchers, and academics to better understand the technology policy issues that need further research, and to provide support as they use the research we’ve developed to inform policy and the broader debate.

What makes Plaintext Group different?

First, we employ computer scientists and software engineers, providing the technical insight needed to develop research that is relevant to the most pressing technology policy issues of our time.

Second, we publish research that aims to be easy to read, synthesize, and act on. We’re focused on the user experience, and we know your time is valuable. Every paper we publish is accompanied by an efficient summary on our website.

Third, we leverage our unique network. Housed within Schmidt Futures, our community comes from Silicon Valley startups and multinational technology companies, in addition to the U.S. Congress, the Biden-Harris Administration, the Obama Administration, and the U.S. Military, among others.

What issues does Plaintext Group work on?

Plaintext Group is focused on advancing technological exploration and scientific discoveries that strengthen U.S. global leadership in AI research and development, modernization of government, semiconductor manufacturing, and more. See our previous work here. If there is an issue you think we should research or that you would like to work together to address, contact us.

What does the name Plaintext mean?

Plaintext is a term used by cryptographers to describe unencrypted, easily-readable information. We aim to be the decryption key that transforms complicated technical concepts into “plain text” that decision makers can act on.
